HYDERABAD: In a remarkable display of dedication and empathy, the medical team at KIMS Cuddles Hospital in Hyderabad orchestrated a heartwarming tale of resilience, compassion, and triumph. Amidst the beeping monitors and the hushed whispers of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), doctors and nurses undertook an extraordinary mission—to bridge the silence for a precious life and her deaf-mute parents.

Meet Marri Bhagyamma, 47, and Marri Rajasekhar, 55, a couple who, against the odds, conceived twins through in vitro fertilization (IVF) at the age of 45. Their journey took an unforeseen turn when one of the twin boys faced pre-term complications, leaving the family in grief. However, a tiny warrior, a baby girl, emerged from the shadows, weighing merely 540 grams at birth.

The challenges were immense. The delicate soul embarked on an 80-day NICU odyssey, battling respiratory hurdles and mourning the loss of her twin brother. Yet, the medical team at KIMS Cuddles, comprising seven dedicated doctors and nine compassionate support staff, rose to the occasion.

The hurdle? Effective communication with Bhagyamma and Rajasekhar, who communicated solely through the language of silence.

Initially navigating through written messages and with the aid of a young relative as a sign language interpreter, the team encountered an unforeseen setback when the interpreter became unavailable. Undeterred, the medical crusaders decided to master a new language—a language of signs and symbols that would resonate with the hearts of the parents.

For ten days, the hospital transformed into a sanctuary of shared learning. Doctors and nurses immersed themselves in the art of sign language, not as a duty but as a testament to their unwavering commitment to this extraordinary family.

Dr. Aparna Chandrasekharan, Clinical Director of Neonatology and Head of NICU, shared insights into the complexity of the case, saying, “Throughout the 80-day NICU stay, our medical team ensured effective communication with the parents, using sign language to convey treatment details and progress.”

The journey wasn’t just medical; it was a symphony of hope, resilience, and silent determination. The baby girl, after 79 days of meticulous care and various forms of respiratory support, emerged victorious with a weight of 1,642 grams. Her discharge came not just with a healthy body but with a promise of a future filled with possibilities.

In a poignant moment, Rajasekhar expressed their gratitude through the graceful dance of sign language. “The doctors and other staff of the hospital have told us the entire treatment procedure. We had regular counseling about our baby’s condition. They gave every minute of information,” she conveyed, a silent testament to a bond forged in the crucible of adversity.

This narrative is not merely a medical feat; it’s a saga of compassion that transcends words—a tale where a hospital staff learned to speak the language of the heart.
